Elchim nasce a Milano nel 1945 dai fratelli Chiminello, e il nome è la contrazione di Elettro-professionali Chiminello. L'obiettivo era chiaro fin dall'inizio: costruire apparecchi destinati esclusivamente ai professionisti del salone. È a Elchim che si deve il primo asciugacapelli pensato per il solo uso professionale, e la qualità del progetto le vale nel 1955 il Compasso d'Oro, il più importante riconoscimento italiano per il disegno industriale. Alcuni suoi apparecchi sono esposti al MoMA di New York. I prodotti sono progettati e realizzati interamente in Italia, in tre stabilimenti, con sede a Milano.
